Dorm Living: College Essentials
Can you believe it's that time already? It feels like just yesterday we were holding our little ones' hands as they took their first steps, and now they're off to college!
Sending our kids off to college is a bittersweet experience, isn't it? On one hand, we're beaming with pride and excitement for their new adventures. On the other hand, we can't help but feel a little nostalgic about the years that flew by so fast. We have a whole new chapter to embrace, and today, we're diving into the world of dorm essentials.
As a seasoned parent who's been through this journey before, let me share some valuable insights to make this process a whole lot easier and even enjoyable. Trust me; it doesn't have to be a stressful hunt for mini-fridges and shower caddies. It can actually be a fun experience for everyone.
First things first, don't forget to include your child in your shopping. Involving them in the decision-making process will not only ensure they get what they need but also make them feel a sense of ownership and excitement about their new home away from home.
Tip #1: Know the Rules
One thing we quickly learned was to be mindful of the college's specific dorm guidelines. Some universities have strict rules about what's allowed in dorm rooms, so it's wise to double-check before splurging on that cute mini grill. It’s crazy what some schools tell kids not to bring, so make sure you know these guidelines. Hanging lights, dorm tape, and even tapestries may not be allowed.
Tip #2: Personalize Their Space
This is where your child's personality can truly shine. From cozy bedding with their favorite colors or patterns to hanging string lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere (if permitted), the possibilities are endless. Walking through the dorm halls on move-in day and again during parents’ weekend, you will see a little of everything. Remember, this is your child’s sanctuary, so let them be creative and expressive. Encourage them to think beyond the ordinary and embrace their unique personality. It’s all about creating an environment that will inspire and nurture them throughout their academic journey.
Tip #3: Shop and Ship or Shop and Pick Up
With the exception of one, my children have all gone (or will go this year) away for college. If, like us, you won’t be driving your child to college, you will need to get creative about getting those dorm essentials to their dorm. Bed Bath, & Beyond used to have an amazing dorm service where you could order pre-packaged essentials and have them shipped to the school. Sadly, that’s no longer an option. So before you start shopping, know what you can buy locally, what you need to bring (via plane, train, etc.), and what you can buy and ship. Most universities allow shipments for move-in provided they arrive within a certain window of time. Others don’t allow it. In that case, finding an Amazon Locker location is key. If that’s not an option, most hotels will allow you to ship it to them, provided you’re not shipping 100 boxes, and they are clearly labeled.
If you do decide to shop at home and schlep everything via train or plane, these IKEA bags will be your friend. They fold away for easy storage and can be checked as luggage.
I’ve included our dorm essentials below. Taking your child to college will bring a mix of emotions, so don’t forget to pack the tissue for yourself. Seeing your child all grown up, taking charge of their life, and stepping into a world of possibilities is truly incredible. And that’s the beauty of this whole experience — it’s not about buying stuff; it’s about embracing a new phase of life with open arms and a heart full of pride.
Enjoy every moment of the experience and try to make it a journey filled with laughter, meaningful conversations, and shared excitement. Here’s to making their dorm room a cozy haven, where they will create memories that will last a lifetime. And most importantly, here’s to a bright future that awaits them beyond those dorm walls. Happy shopping, and cheers to college life! May it be everything you dream of and more! 🎉🎓
